The company

A small outfit in Larvik, and a page with the facts on it.

Wood Wood DA is registered in Norway and run from Storgata in Larvik, on the Vestfold coast.

Wood is a trade settled by looking at the material and talking about the job, not by reading a page about it. So this page carries what paperwork carries: the registered name, the street, the person answerable, and a line to write to. The rest is a conversation, and the mailbox below reaches a person rather than a form.

A number worth knowing

Take a tenth off every dimension and a quarter of the pot is gone.

Clay shrinks as it dries and again as it fires, and the figure a potter quotes — ten per cent, twelve, fourteen — is linear. It applies to the height, the width and the depth at once, so the volume falls by the cube of it. That is why a mug has to be thrown so much bigger than it looks in the mind, and why the capacity is always the thing that surprises a beginner.

per cent, drying and firing together

millilitres, the mug you want at the end

13.6%bigger in every dimension at the wheel
31.9%of the volume lost between wheel and shelf
587 mlthe wet pot must hold to finish at 400

A 12 per cent shrinkage is not a 12 per cent correction: throw 13.6 per cent wider and taller, and the pot still gives back 31.9 per cent of what it held, because 0.88 multiplied by itself three times is 0.681.

All of it is one line of arithmetic: finish at D means throwing at D ⁄ (1 − s), and the volume ratio is the cube of that. Nothing here is a craft claim — the shrinkage figure is yours to put in, because it belongs to the clay body and the firing, not to any piece of software.

There is an app, too.

Unconnected to the timber, and published for its own sake. Kiln is a glazing studio: pick a vessel, pick a clay, pour and dip glazes over it, then fire it and see how the surface comes out. It works with no connection, keeps no account and sells nothing.
